Motorola: Will it win big with wireless data?

Analysis provided by Theflyonthewall.com:

Motorola, Inc. (NYSE:MOT) announced on Friday that is is acquiring Good Technologies to further expand its presence in the wireless software business. This follows Motorola's deal to acquire Symbol Technologies, a maker of wireless devices to collect inventory data, earlier in the year.

Motorola's acquisition of Good Technologies appears to be motivated by a desire to gain control of a wireless software platform needed for its Q product, its wireless email device which first hit stores in the late spring.

Outside of Research In Motion Limited (NASDAQ:RIMM), the maker of the Blackberry, the wireless data market has been a black hole for investors. However, there is little doubt that wireless data is the future. Motorola's recent acquisitions may signal that profitability in this industry is upon us.

From an investment perspective, if Motorola continues to talk up Q at meetings with the investment community during the next few months, this means wireless data has arrived. If Motorola avoids talking about Q, making money in wireless data may still be a year away.
