CF Industries (CF) falls as takeover drama continues

CF logoCF Industries (CF - option chain) stock is trading lower today after the situation surrounding two takeover deals continues to get murkier. Agrium (AGU) announced this morning that CF's stockholders tendered 62% of their shares into a hostile takeover offer launched by AGU. AGU extended the offer, which originally was to expire yesterday, to December 18. Meanwhile, CF's board said that it does not believe that the tender results reflect stockholder support for Agrium's offer. At the same time, Terra Industries (TRA) is fending off a hostile bid made by CF. The uncertainty surrounding this situation is holding back CF shares and if you think this stock won't be rising too far in the coming months, then it could be a good time to look at a bearish hedged play on the stock.

This morning, CF opened at $83.60. So far today the stock has hit a high of $82.50 and a low of $84.48. As of 11:50, TRA is trading at $82.71, down $3.58 (-4.2%). The chart for CF looks neutral and S&P gives CF a neutral 3 STARS (out of 5) hold ranking.

Legislation co-sponsored by U.S. Sen. Lamar Alexander, R-Tennessee, and U.S. Senator Jim Webb, D-Virginia, would offer $100 billion in loan guarantees for nuclear plants, which would amount to a $10 billion federal government liability. The bill would also fund research in solar energy, carbon capture, and other energy technologies.

Retail sales up, manufacturing down in October

Separate reports showed simultaneous improvements and declines in the U.S. economy.

First the good news. The Commerce Department reported that retail sales rose 1.4% in October, after falling 2.3% in September. It must be noted that September sales were revised downward from a previous -1.5%.

The boost came for auto sales, which rose 7.4%, after a drop of 14.4% in September. The sharp drop in September was mainly due to the termination of the "cash for clunkers" program.

Long dated oil contracts surge to almost $100 per barrel

Sometimes you can get an indication of market trend by looking at the prices of futures contracts in the forward months. Oil futures contracts trade out as far a 2017. Oil futures contracts for the year 2017 are trading a just a shade under $100 per barrel, while spot crude was trading at $77.65 per barrel (spot prices are cash prices.)

The International Energy Agency has said that last year's spike of oil prices to $147 per barrel was a contributing factor in tipping the world into recession. It damaged trade balances, reduced household income and dampened growth, putting pressure on inflation and interest rates.

His new legislative proposal is to break up big banks that are deemed "too big to fail." To quote Mr. Sanders: "if an institution is too big to fail, it is too big to exist. We should break them up so they are no longer in a position to bring down our entire economy."

Mexico beats China in American assembly for export factories

American businesses are setting up shop in Mexico instead of China. China, which was the number one location for manufacture of goods bound for the U.S., has fallen into third place. Mexico is now number one, followed by India.

Several factors have converged to make Mexico an attractive place for manufacture. Daniel Silva of the Mission Economic Development Authority said: "Compared to China, Mexico offers better access to North American markets with a shorter, faster and cheaper transportation route to move products and supplies by truck, rather than over thousands of miles by ship, rail and truck combined."

Will private equity take down the economy?

Over the past decade we seen at least $1 trillion dollars spent by private equity firms. These firms have taken over companies for a pittance and then pillaged them by slashing employees and cutting costs. They then used the money to pay down debt rather than rebuilding the company.

Now all of the debt thrown on the acquired companies is coming due and it could cause another economic disaster, even bring down the economy.

Regional airlines find some upside in a tough market

Across the country, big jets are disappearing -- nudged shoved aside by the little guys, which are cheaper to operate and don't require as many butts to fill seats.

The number of empty seats falls, and revenue per available seat-mile (RASM) goes up. It's pretty straightforward. But, for crowded flights, this could leave a few people stuck without their preferred routes. The alternative, of course, is an unsustainable status quo, in which a few passengers remain happy ... until the airline folds.

Which companies will profit from smart grid technology?

First off, what is smart grid technology? Smart grid technology allows two-way communication between a home or business and the utility company.

Then you are probably wondering why is there so much interest in smart grid technology now? The key reason is that our electrical transmission system is outmoded and overloaded. Our present system will be unable to handle the increasing demand for electricity for much longer. Take the electric car. If thousands of these cars are on the road next year, we will need the electrical delivery system to power them.
