RBC initiated Visa Inc (NYSE: V) with an Outperform based on margin expansion opportunities, the secular growth story towards electronic payments, lack of credit risk, and international opportunities. Piper started Visa with a Neutral rating. While the firm believes that Visa should generate long-term earnings growth and free cash flow, the firm thinks that Visa's valuation has increased the risk that strong earnings growth may not meet investors' expectations. However, the firm believes that Visa can still post strong results despite the U.S. consumer slowdown. Goldman initiated Visa with a Buy rating and $90 target and Morgan Stanley started shares with an Equal Weight rating and $75 target.

Citigroup rated Cardionet Inc (NASDAQ: BEAT) a Buy, citing favorable arrhythmia monitoring trends. The firm has a $26 target on Cardionet.

Motorola Inc (NYSE: MOT) was assumed with an Equal Weight rating and $75 target at Morgan Stanley on valuation.

Thomas Weisel downgraded Motorola Inc (NYSE: MOT) to Market Weight from Overweight based on the general uncertainty in the company's core markets and the likelihood that the spin off may not occur for several quarters.

Piper believes Williams-Sonoma Inc (NYSE: WSM) faces a challenging environment, and their checks reveal weakness at Pottery Barn. The physical properties of GaAs and InP allow the firm to make chips that are smaller, faster and more energy efficient than the usual silicon-based devices. The company focuses on applications for wireless local area networks, cable set-top boxes, cell phones, cable television systems, microwave systems and fiber-to-the-premises communications systems. Customers include Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) and Motorola (NYSE: MOT).

The firm surprised the Street last week, when it reported Q1 EPS of 15 cents and revenues of $74.4 million. Analysts had been looking for ten cents and $69.2 million. Management also guided Q2 EPS to 16-17 cents (13 cent consensus) and Q2 revenues to $77-$79 million ($72.96M consensus). Roth Capital subsequently reiterated its "buy" recommendation on ANAD and Charter Equity upgraded the stock to "market perform".

The shares popped on the news and are now forming a bullish "pennant" consolidation pattern. Prices frequently exit pennants moving in the same direction they were traveling on entry. In this case, that would be to the upside.

Altogether, brokers now recommend the issue with six "strong buys", two "buys" and five "holds". Analysts see a 22% growth rate, through the next year. The ANAD Price to Sales ratio (2.71), Price to Book ratio (2.67) and EPS Growth rate (0.00 to 0.15 yr/yr) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. Institutional investors hold about 95% of the outstanding shares. Over the past 52 weeks, the stock has traded between $5.85 and $19.53. A stop-loss of $9.50 looks good here.

The latest earnings report was anemic. Plus, the company's bonds are selling at distressed levels. In fact, the CEO -- Michel Mayer -- quit his post in February (but don't cry for him as he took millions in a nice payday). And of course, Freescale's key customer, Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT), is ailing.

So, might this prevent further buyout deals in the semiconductor space?

Not necessarily. According to a piece in Financial News, it looks like KKR is still bullish on the sector. Actually, the firm made an investment in the sector, NXP, which has taken a drubbing.

But, then again, private equity is supposed to take the long view, right?

Well, KKR thinks that NXP could be a vehicle for consolidation. And, the firm has no shortage of cash to pull it off. Besides, NXP recently sold its wireless assets to STMicroelectronics for a cool $1.5 billion.

It's a gutsy move for KKR -- but does make sense. With a cyclical downturn, there should be many bargains.
What can be said? Motorola has been losing market share for the last two years and there is no reason to believe that it can reverse that trend. When its RAZR was selling well, it had 22% of the global market. Now that number is closer to 14%. Nokia (NYSE:NOK), the leader, has 39% of the global market.

The market share figure is not just a number on a piece of paper. It may result in making the spin-off of the handset unit to shareholders more difficult. After pressure from Carl Icahn and other investors, Motorola will split the company into two pieces. One will have the handset assets and the other the home products, enterprise, and government sales operations.

There has been some speculation that the handset part of the company is worth nothing. Motorola tried to sell the operation last year. As far as anyone knows, there were no buyers. The company's shares now trade for $9.55, down from $26 in October 2006. Almost all of that loss in value comes from problems in the handset operations.

When shareholders get their handset division stock in the spin-out, they will be lucky if they are worth $1.

Stock futures declined early Thursday following Amazon's earnings, Starbucks' profit warnings as well as other companies. In addition, debate over an expected pause in the Federal Reserve recent wave of rate cuts as well as some data seem to leave investors more on a cautious mood this morning.

U.S. stocks ended higher on Wednesday after better-than-forecast results from Boeing (NYSE: BA) helped sentiment on the Street, albeit in a choppy manner. The Dow industrials finished nearly 43 points higher, or 0.34%, the S&P 500 rose almost 4 points, or 0.29%, and the Nasdaq Composite rose 28 points, or 1.29%.

Today, several economic reports are due out. At 8:30 a.m., weekly initial jobless claims will be released, as well as March durable goods orders. At 10:00 a.m., new home sales will come out, where another drop is expected.

This morning, investors are still digesting reports from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) and Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN).
While Apple beat estimates on both the top line and bottom line, reporting a 43% jump in sales and a 36% rise in profit, as well as Mac sales that blew all expectations, the iPhone maker gave a conservative outlook. Shares are down nearly 1.5% in premarket trading.
Amazon shares were hurt even more, dropping nearly 4.5% in premarket trading despite a 29% climb in profit and a 36% jump in sales. Investors were more concerned with the company's profit margins and outlook.

From this morning, Whirlpool (NYSE: WHR) has already missed earnings estimates, but Ford (NYSE: F) managed to post a surprising $100 million profit. Ford shares are up nearly 5.5% in premarket trading, while WHR shares are down about 6.3% in premarket trading.

Also reporting today are Motorola (NYSE: MOT) and US Airways (NYSE: LCC) before the opening bell. Microsoft (NYSE: MSFT) and American Express (NYSE: AXP) report after the close.

And if anyone missed last night's profit warning from Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX), they won't miss the likely 10% decline in the share price at the start if premarket trading is any indication.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Research In Motion (RIMM): Share price cycles through positive trading channel

Filed under: Earnings reports, Analyst upgrades and downgrades, Microsoft (MSFT), Motorola (MOT), Nokia Corp. Company devices allow access to email, telephone, messaging, Internet and intranet-based applications. RIM products include the BlackBerry wireless platform and the RIM Wireless Handheld product line. The firm also provides software development tools and makes radio-based modems that other manufacturers incorporate into their portable devices. Competitors include Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), Motorola (NYSE: MOT) and Nokia (NYSE: NOK).

The company surprised the Street earlier in the month, when it reported Q4 EPS of 72 cents and revenues of $1.88 billion. Analysts had been looking for 70 cents and $1.86 billion. Management also guided Q1 EPS to 82-86 cents (76 cent consensus) and Q1 revenues to $2.23-$2.30 billion ($2.02B consensus). In discussing the solid numbers, the firm noted that heightened retail activities helped drive exceptional subscriber growth during the quarter. Oppenheimer, Lehman Brothers and Caris subsequently reiterated "buy" recommendations on the stock and declared price targets in the $135-$150 range.

The news kept RIMM shares cycling in a positive, seven-week trading channel. The price has just rebounded from the base of that channel, where an oversold MACD parameter suggested the potential for a rise back toward the top.

Altogether, brokers recommend the issue with nine "strong buys", eighteen "buys", five "holds" and one "sell". Analysts see a 33% growth rate, through the next year. The RIMM Sales Growth rate (102.36%), EPS Growth rate (118.95%), Operating Margin (28.81%), Net Profit Margin (21.53%), Return on Assets (30.09%), Return on Investment (39.33%) and Return on Equity (40.33%) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. Institutions hold about 68% of the outstanding shares. The stock is one of those used to calculate the Nasdaq 100 Index and the AMEX Internet Index. Over the past 52 weeks, it has traded between $42.93 and $137.01. A stop-loss of $103.50 looks good here.

Of course, I'm talking about the wireless giant's cellphone division, which is still in the top three worldwide in terms of sales. It's sinking faster than a rock, though. How did this come to pass?

After reading a missive by a former Motorola employee, Numair Faraz, who worked closely with the late Geoffrey Frost -- Motorola's former Chief Marketing Officer and father of the RAZR handset -- one has to wonder about a few things. For example, just what kind of incompetence has brewed in the corner office for the last three years? From reading Faraz's words, both former CEO Ed Zander is pitched as a complete idiot and slave driver who literally worked Frost to death and current CEO Greg Brown is pitched as a technological moron who can't even use email (his secretary prints off messages to read to him later). Are these truths? They sure could be.

Zander, who was highly regarded when he came back in 2004 to take over for CEO (and grandson of company founder) Chris Galvin, seemed to have everything going for him. Looking back, nothing ever went right for Zander. The RAZR that gave Motorola its two-year recognition was in the works before he arrived. What did Zander -- a former president of Sun Microsystems (NASDAQ: JAVA) -- do during his tenure with Motorola?

Swipe big chunks of compensation while churning out middling performance, according to many on Wall Street and Faraz as well. Maybe Galvin was not such a bad CEO after all, right? When Faraz said in 2003 that "Motorola's biggest problem is that Samsung kicks ass," he wasn't kidding -- and that's precisely what happened. Seems to be another example of very sub-par performance being rewarded with a golden parachute, while shareholders get shafted once again. Motorola stood at under $10 a share early today.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Before the bell: AMR, BA, MOT, HON, YHOO, PG, DIS

Filed under: Before the bell, Management, Google (GOOG), Microsoft (MSFT), Yahoo! Stronger growth in the second half? No, the only catalysts I look for in tech are product cycles, and other than Salesforce.com (NYSE: CRM) (Cramer's Take) (nice move there), Research in Motion (NASDAQ: RIMM) (Cramer's Take) and maybe Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) (Cramer's Take), because we need a new phone there already, there are no new product cycles to speak of.

Layer on the fact that RIMM has a product cycle and had a great quarter and is below where it traded at its high after the quarter -- can you imagine where that would be if the market were to turn down -- and you can see that tech may be cheap for nobody knows how long.

When that happens, you get a chain reaction when the market turns bad. Suddenly you have Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) (Cramer's Take) thinking about overpaying, at least that will be the scuttlebutt. You have Hewlett-Packard (NYSE: HPQ) (Cramer's Take) going down because AMD says things are weaker. You have Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) (Cramer's Take) going down because AMD's not going bankrupt. You have Freescale on the cover of Business Week making it clear that there won't be any deals from this sector any time soon. Next you will have Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) (Cramer's Take) head down on a slowing ad story from some other company.

That's what happens when you are in it only for valuation and there aren't any product cycles to stem the tide.

I have heard tech praised endlessly this year, and yet it has done nothing. I think it is about to do less than nothing right now. I think it is going down.

Sure, IBM (NYSE: IBM) (Cramer's Take) will keep hyping its stock, and I don't think HPQ is doing badly. How low can Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN) (Cramer's Take) go, it is so long-term cheap. Nokia's (NYSE: NOK) (Cramer's Take) having a decent quarter. EMC's (NYSE: EMC) (Cramer's Take) quarter is OK, but it does have VMware (NYSE: VMW) (Cramer's Take), which, unfortunately, is not doing that well despite the hype.

But they can't exist in a vacuum. There's not enough here to warrant further rallying.

I want to be careful of this group. The negative pin action could be swift and there is no great secular trend, like food shortage or oil or ethanol or Chinese building to keep things rolling along.

Random musings: If Kerry Killinger stays on when TPG does the recap of Washington Mutual (NYSE: WM) (Cramer's Take), I would short the stock.

RELATED LINKS:
The firm develops and licenses a range of advanced chip packaging, interconnect, and optics solutions for the consumer, computing, communications, medical and defense electronics markets.

There was good news for Tessera investors late last month, when the U.S. International Trade Commission overturned a stay on a company patent infringement case against Motorola (NYSE: MOT), Qualcomm (NYSE: QCOM) and others. The case may now proceed, but an out-of-court settlement is possible. Tessera came to such an agreement in 2002, for example, with current customer Texas Instruments (NYSE: TXN). TSRA shares fell sharply in late February, when the stay was originally announced. Once it was lifted, Davenport upgraded the stock to "strong buy" status and declared a $35 price target.

The share price popped on the news and has since been consolidating the gain in a bullish "flag" pattern. Prices frequently exit flags moving in the same direction they were traveling on entry. In this case, that would be to the upside. Note that the flag has retained its integrity, despite a subsequent preliminary U.S. Patent and Trademark Office ruling rejecting certain company claims in yet another enforcement action.

Altogether, brokers now recommend the stock with four "strong buys", four "buys" and two "holds". Analysts see an 63% growth rate, through the next year. The TSRA PEG ratio (1.02), Price to Book ratio (2.55), Price to Free Cash Flow ratio (14.87), Operating Margin (33.80%), Net Profit Margin (23.07%) and Net Income per Employee ($118.5k) compare favorably with industry, sector and S&P 500 averages. Institutional investors hold about 95% of the outstanding shares. Over the past 52 weeks, the stock has traded between $11.11 and $46.43. A stop-loss of $18.85 looks good here. Note that the firm is expected to report Q1 results in early May. It has reiterating its revenue guidance for the first and second quarters and that guidance does not include settlements from the company's current enforcement actions.

The current job cuts represent approximately 4% of its total job force as of the end of 2007 of 66,000 employees.

It wasn't that long ago that Motorola was a major force in the world of mobile phones, but over the past two years the company has definitely fallen from grace among consumers. Two years ago the company was the world's second largest handset maker, but that status is no more, and the company is currently sitting in the fourth spot overall.

Analysts have blamed the company's drop due to lack of innovation, and some have gone so far as to predict that the company's handset business is doomed if Motorola can not pick up the pace and start to pump out new and fresh ideas for consumers to gobble up.

At its peak, the company was able to rely on sales of its highly popular Razr phone line (which I admit, I still have myself), but the popularity of the Razr phones has fallen, and competitors such as Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and Samsung have been able to leave Motorola behind with their newer models. While last year's launch of the iPhone, by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) was by no means enough to push Apple ahead of Motorola, the iPhone definitely stole customers away from Motorola and has added pressure on the company to step up the development process.

The company recently announced that it was going to separate out this ailing portion of its business, and analysts hope that by giving the handset unit its autonomy that it will be able to attract higher profile executives who can help turn things around. Time will tell how this will play out.

Michael Fowlkes has worked as a stock trader for seven years and spent the last four years working as an analyst for the online investment advisory service Investor's Observer.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

The day $2 billion walked out the door, extreme savers' winning secrets & deals in electronics - Today in Money 4/4

Filed under: Microsoft (MSFT), Apple Inc (AAPL), Motorola (MOT), JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Money and Finance Today, Honeywell Intl (HON), Bear Stearns Cos (BSC)

In the News:

This morning is no different. With the labor report released in about an hour, U.S. stock futures are mixed, near flat, as investors await the data.

Despite jobless claims Thursday rising to the highest level in two-and-half years, U.S. stocks finished with a modest rise thanks to better-than-forecast ISM service figures. The Dow industrials finished up 20 points, or 0.16%, and the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq Composite each rose more than a point, or 0.16% and 0.08% respectively.

Today, investors will focus their attention on the March jobs report due out at 8:30 a.m. EDT. Non farm payroll is expected to show a decline once again -- the third straight month. Economists expect the release show a decline of 50,000 jobs. Also, the unemployment rate is estimated to have risen to 5% in March. No doubt, the market will react to the jobs report as soon as it comes out.

In corporate news, and related to the subject of jobs, Motorola (NYSE: MOT) said late Thursday it was laying off 2,600 employees, after it has already laid off more than 10,000 employees since last year.

Meanwhile, problems in the financial sector are not completely over yet and each day some other news item reminds us of the turmoil that may have seen its worst days these past weeks. Today, we hear that a former president of UBS AG (NYSE: UBS) urged the Swiss bank to split off the investment banking unit. UBS has announced over $37.4 billion in writedowns over the past nine months resulting from the subprime crisis.

Another sector that has dominated the headlines this past week was pharmaceutical. This morning, for a change, the news is positive as GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) said Thursday it had received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for its vaccine to prevent rotavirus in infants, a market currently dominated by Merck (NYSE: MRK).

Overseas, Asian markets were mixed, while European markets gained by midday trading.

Permalink | Email this | Linking Blogs | Comments

Newspaper wrap-up: FAA alleges Southwest Airlines tried to choose inspectors

Filed under: Newspapers, Magazines, General Motors (GM), Motorola (MOT), Citigroup Inc.
